You Already Have the Labs. You Still Don’t Have Answers.

Your bloodwork came back “normal.” You are still tired, still foggy, still not recovering. We read the labs you already have — against optimal ranges, not disease-detection ranges — and tell you what they actually say.

Lab analysis + 1-hour consult — from $350

Functional lab interpretation is a detailed re-analysis of bloodwork you already have, evaluated against optimal ranges rather than the disease-detection ranges used by conventional labs. Pro Fit High Performance Medicine produces a written 40-page functional analysis of your existing labs and reviews it with you in a one-hour consult. Consults start at $350. You do not need to order new labs.

What Is Functional Lab Interpretation?

A conventional lab range is built to catch disease. It is a wide statistical band drawn from a general population — much of which is unwell. If your result falls anywhere inside it, you are told you are normal.

A functional range is narrower. It describes where a marker sits when a system is actually working well. The gap between those two ranges is where most high performers live: not sick, not well, and told nothing is wrong.

Functional lab interpretation reads your existing results inside that gap — and reads them as a system, not as a list of isolated numbers.

Clinical Note A single marker rarely tells you anything. The signal is in the pattern. Ferritin at the bottom of range, TSH climbing within range, and a slightly elevated MCV read as three unremarkable numbers on their own — and as one coherent story when read together.

“Normal” vs. “Optimal”: Where the Answers Hide

These are the optimal ranges Pro Fit actually scores against — the same ranges used in every Pro Fit lab analysis. The point is not the specific cutoffs. It is that which range you use determines whether you get an answer or get dismissed.

MarkerStandard Lab RangePro Fit OptimalWhat the gap can mean
TSH0.4 – 4.0 mIU/L1.5 – 3.0 mIU/LA TSH of 3.8 is “normal” and often symptomatic
FerritinVaries widely by lab and sex45 – 79 ng/mLFerritin of 18 flags as fine; hair loss and fatigue say otherwise
Vitamin D (25-OH)30 – 100 ng/mL50 – 90 ng/mL32 clears the bar and still underperforms
hs-CRP< 3.0 mg/L0 – 1.0 mg/L2.4 is “not elevated” but is not quiet either

Standard lab ranges vary by laboratory and by sex. Optimal ranges are narrower by design, and they are where the actionable information lives.

What’s Inside the 40-Page Analysis

This is a written clinical document, not a printout with a few markers highlighted.

  • Every marker re-scored against functional ranges, not just flagged if out of conventional range
  • Pattern analysis across systems — thyroid, metabolic, inflammatory, nutrient, hormonal, hepatic, renal
  • Root-cause mapping — which findings are drivers and which are downstream consequences
  • What’s missing — the markers your panel didn’t run that your pattern says it should have
  • Prioritized next steps, sequenced — what to address first, and what not to touch yet
  • A one-hour consult to walk through all of it and answer questions

How It Works

  1. Send your labs. Any recent bloodwork — Quest, LabCorp, your physician’s panel, a prior functional panel. PDFs are fine.
  2. We build the analysis. Every marker re-scored against optimal ranges and read as a system.
  3. We review it together. A full hour, walking through what the data says and what it means for you.
  4. You leave with a plan — and the written document to keep.

What It Costs

Lab analysis and consult start at $350. The final fee depends on the panel — how many markers were run, how many systems are involved, and the length of the resulting analysis. A single basic panel sits at the low end. A comprehensive multi-system workup with hormones, gut, and advanced cardiometabolic markers runs higher.

There is no charge to find out where you’d land. The initial consult is free, and we’ll tell you the exact fee before any work begins.

Who This Is For

  • You have recent labs and were told everything is normal — but you don’t feel normal
  • You’re a high performer whose energy, recovery, or clarity has quietly declined
  • You want a second read on results you’ve already paid for
  • You’ve “tried everything” and no one has connected the findings
  • You want to know which markers to run next, before spending on more testing

Who this isn’t for

This is not urgent or emergency care, and it does not replace your physician. Pro Fit is a functional medicine and nutrition practice — Kelsey Koehler is an FDN-P (Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner), not a licensed physician. We do not diagnose disease or prescribe medication, and decisions about medication remain between you and your prescriber. What we do is read your data as a system and build the nutrition, lifestyle, and supplementation strategy around it.

Lab Interpretation in Birmingham & Vestavia Hills

Pro Fit is based in Vestavia Hills and serves the greater Birmingham, Alabama area — and, because the work is virtual, clients well beyond it.

Birmingham has no shortage of places to get blood drawn. Quest, LabCorp, and the walk-in labs will all hand you a panel. What almost none of them do is tell you what it means. If you already have results sitting in a portal or a PDF, you do not need another blood draw. You need someone to read them properly.

If you’d rather start from a full panel, see functional lab testing. If you want your existing labs read, you’re in the right place.

You already paid for the labs. Find out what they’re telling you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you interpret lab results I already have?

Yes. Send us bloodwork you already have — from Quest, LabCorp, your physician, or a previous functional panel. We re-score every marker against functional optimal ranges, analyze the patterns across systems, and produce a written 40-page analysis, then review it with you in a one-hour consult. No new labs are required.

How much does functional lab interpretation cost in Birmingham?

Lab analysis and consult start at $350. The final fee varies with the panel — the number of markers run, how many body systems are involved, and the length of the resulting analysis. The initial consult is free and we confirm the exact fee before any work begins.

Do I need to order new labs?

No. That is the point of this service. If you have recent bloodwork, we work from what you already have. If your panel is missing markers that your pattern suggests are important, the analysis will tell you exactly which ones to add — so you spend on testing only where it will actually change the answer.

What is the difference between a normal and an optimal lab range?

A conventional range is built to detect disease and is drawn from a broad population, much of which is unwell. An optimal range describes where a marker sits when the system is functioning well, and is narrower. A result can fall inside the conventional range and still be far from optimal — which is why people are routinely told they are normal while feeling anything but.

My doctor said my bloodwork is normal but I still feel terrible. What should I do?

This is the most common reason people come to us. “Normal” means no disease was detected — it does not mean your physiology is working well. A functional re-read of the same labs frequently surfaces suboptimal thyroid conversion, low ferritin, early insulin resistance, or low-grade inflammation sitting quietly inside the conventional range.

Do I need a doctor’s order or a referral?

No referral is needed to have your existing labs interpreted. You keep your own physician. This is an additional, systems-based read of your data — not a replacement for medical care.

How long does the analysis take?

Typically about one to two weeks from the time we receive your labs, depending on panel complexity. You receive the written analysis and then meet for the one-hour consult to walk through it.

Is functional lab interpretation covered by insurance?

Pro Fit is a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance. Many clients use HSA or FSA funds. Because we work from labs you already have, there is no additional lab cost for this service.

Do you work with clients outside Birmingham?

Yes. Pro Fit is based in Vestavia Hills and serves the greater Birmingham, Alabama area, and the practice is virtual — so lab interpretation is available to clients nationwide.
